Pierre Deny, the French actor who played JVMA fashion boss Louis de Léon in Emily in Paris seasons 3 and 4, died Monday at 69 after a sudden ALS battle.

Pierre Deny, the French actor who played JVMA fashion boss Louis de Léon in seasons three and four of Netflix’s Emily in Paris, died on Monday, May 25, after what his family described as a sudden case of ALS. He was 69.

His daughters confirmed the death in a statement to French broadcaster TF1. “It is with deep emotion that we announce the passing of Pierre Deny which occurred this Monday following a sudden and severe case of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Charcot’s Disease.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s obituary tracking Deny’s English-language breakthrough and decades of French television work notes that his death came nearly a week after Netflix confirmed Emily in Paris will end after its sixth season, now shooting in Greece.

Deny’s role on Emily in Paris was central to two seasons of the show’s later run. As Louis de Léon, he played the head of luxury goods conglomerate JVMA and the father of Nicholas de Léon (Paul Forman), the high school friend turned boyfriend of Mindy Chen (Ashley Park). The character anchored several of the show’s most consequential workplace and family beats.

His French career was longer. TMZ’s writeup of the death, including the immediate tribute from singer Sylvie Vartan notes that Deny was best known in France for his long run as Dr. Renaud Dumaze on the soap opera Demain Nous Appartient (Tomorrow Is Ours).

That role spanned more than 500 episodes. Deny began his career in French theater in the 1980s before becoming a fixture on domestic television series including Julie Lescaut. His most recent on-screen appearance was an episode of the TF1 series Camping Paradis in 2025.

Vartan, the French-Bulgarian singer and actress, wrote in an Instagram tribute: “So sad to hear of the passing of Pierre Deny. I shared some great moments with him on stage in Isabelle Mergault’s play. He was a generous actor and a sensitive and funny man.”

Vartan and Deny had co-starred in Isabelle Margault’s 2015 stage play Ne Me Regardez Pas Comme Ca.

Luce Mouchel, who played opposite Deny for seven years on Demain Nous Appartient, posted a longer tribute on Instagram. E! Online’s coverage of the on-set Tomorrow Is Ours tributes includes Mouchel’s full message describing seven years of train rides, canteen lunches, and shared theater outings with Deny.

“A short decade of shared life that should not have ended so quickly and so brutally,” Mouchel wrote. “I’m thinking of your daughters and their exceptional courage. Thinking of you, my last visit and your sparkling eyes, rest in peace, Dr. Dumaze.”

Netflix has not yet issued a statement on Deny’s death. The Hollywood Reporter said it has reached out to the streamer for comment.

Emily in Paris’s final season is in production. Whether the show will acknowledge Deny’s character’s absence in the writing has not been announced.

He is survived by his daughters.
