Kenneth Lonergan's first film since Manchester by the Sea will star Aubrey Plaza, Adam Driver, Vanessa Kirby, and Matthew Broderick. Production starts this fall.
Ten years after Manchester by the Sea, Kenneth Lonergan is back with a new film and one of the more striking ensemble casts announced at Cannes this year.
Kenneth Lonergan is returning to the director’s chair with Tomorrow Is a Drag, a new drama starring Aubrey Plaza, Adam Driver, Vanessa Kirby, and Matthew Broderick. The project was announced at the Cannes market, with Variety first reporting the news. Production is scheduled to begin this fall in New York.
It is Lonergan’s first film as director since Manchester by the Sea, which won Casey Affleck the Academy Award for best actor and Lonergan himself the Oscar for original screenplay, with a best director nomination alongside them. The decade-long wait has made this announcement one of the more anticipated in recent memory for fans of serious American drama. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the title suggests Lonergan’s trademark mix of deadpan humor and emotional weight.
The casting of Plaza carries particular resonance. Her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, died by suicide in January 2026. In a rare public appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast in the months since, she described navigating grief as something like being stationed on a cliff above a gorge full of monsters. “Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning,” she told Poehler. “I think I’m okay, but it’s a daily struggle, obviously.” Landing a Lonergan project in the middle of that suggests she has not retreated.
Driver is currently at Cannes presenting James Gray’s Paper Tiger in competition. Kirby is known for her work in the Mission Impossible franchise and Pieces of a Woman, for which she received an Oscar nomination. Broderick, who starred in Lonergan’s stage work as well as Manchester by the Sea, rounds out the ensemble.
MK2 Films is handling international sales. WME is representing North American rights. The producer is Sara Murphy, who won an Oscar for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, working under her Fat City production company. For Lonergan, whose reputation rests on three features made over 25 years, every new film is an event. This one, with this cast, arrives with more anticipation than most.
