ABC has ordered a new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff set in Texas, with word surfacing Tuesday. The pickup extends the Shondaland medical-drama universe to its third in-universe series, after Private Practice and Station 19.

The order lands as the parent show winds toward its 23rd season. Grey’s Anatomy is currently airing its 22nd, anchoring the 10 p.m. hour of ABC’s Thursday night block. Tell-Tale TV’s breakdown of the fall 2025 schedule placed Grey’s behind 9-1-1 and the freshman spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville.

Texas marks new geographic territory for the franchise. The flagship and Station 19 both took place in the Pacific Northwest, while Private Practice ran in Los Angeles. The move into the South positions ABC for a regional procedural arms race with NBC’s Chicago franchise and the broader Dick Wolf universe.

The network’s appetite for spinoffs has scaled up. The 9-1-1 universe just added the Nashville iteration with Chris O’Donnell, Jessica Capshaw and LeAnn Rimes leading the cast, premiering October 9, 2025. Tell-Tale TV’s earlier coverage of the original Station 19 order captured the moment ABC first began treating the Grey’s universe as a stackable property.

Showrunner, cast and premiere window for the Texas spinoff have not been announced. ABC has leaned heavily on direct-to-series pickups in recent cycles, a pattern Variety’s coverage of the network’s 2025 renewals flagged as the network skipping pilot season entirely.

Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes has historically been involved in the universe’s spinoffs alongside producer Betsy Beers. ABC has not publicly confirmed who will helm the new project.

The original Grey’s Anatomy launched in March 2005 and remains ABC’s longest-running scripted drama. Its Season 22 renewal earlier this year reinforced the network’s view of the show as a procedural tentpole.

The Texas spinoff joins a growing class of geographically franchised procedurals. The tonal register, whether it stays in Grey’s medical-case-of-the-week and relationship-turmoil mode or pivots to something else entirely, is the open question.

For now, the only certainty is the location. ABC is heading to Houston, or Austin, or somewhere in between, with a scalpel in hand.
