Alyssa Farah Griffin slipped on The View Tuesday and called Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding his funeral, while hosts roasted the president for skipping the ceremony.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin served up a live-television slip of the tongue on Tuesday’s episode of The View, calling Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding his funeral while making a point about parental attendance.
“I said he should go. A parent should try to never miss their child’s funeral. Or, I’m sorry, oh god, wedding!” Griffin said, catching herself immediately as the audience reacted.
Griffin attributed the slip to exhaustion. “I’m so tired,” she said. “I have a 3-month-old.” The clip went viral within minutes of the broadcast.
The segment was a roundtable on President Donald Trump‘s decision to skip his son’s wedding. The Wrap-syndicated coverage tracking Griffin’s slip and the broader discussion of Trump’s absence captures the panel’s general lack of sympathy.
Joy Behar offered her own theory. “This guy has to be the bride at every wedding, so they’re not gonna pay attention to him, okay? That’s number one. And if they had done the wedding at McDonald’s, maybe he would go.”
Sunny Hostin went a different direction. She noted Don Jr. had attended both his father’s second and third weddings, and that Don Jr. had struck her as a damaged boy who wanted his father’s love during a previous appearance on the show.
The actual wedding had two parts. The Daily Mail’s scoop on the secret Palm Beach ceremony and the marriage certificate it obtained reveals that Don Jr. and Bettina Anderson were legally married Thursday, May 21 at Anderson’s sister Kristina McPherson’s West Palm Beach home, with brother-in-law Brad McPherson officiating.
The Caribbean celebration this Memorial Day weekend was the public version. Only close friends and family attended, including Ivanka Trump.
The downsize was deliberate. The couple, originally planning a large White House wedding, scaled back after the war in Iran complicated the optics. They had pushed the date to fall, then reversed and ran the Palm Beach ceremony last week.
President Trump’s official statement framed his absence as duty. “While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr, and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so,” he wrote. He added that it was important for him to remain in Washington at the White House during this important period of time.
The View’s panel noted that Trump posted AI-generated memes during the same period he was supposedly too busy to attend. Griffin’s broader point, made before her slip, was simply that a parent should be at their child’s wedding.
Don Jr. is 48; Anderson is 39. They became engaged in December 2025 at Camp David.
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC. Griffin’s slip is the latest in a long history of on-air daytime gaffes that travel further than the segments they appear in.
The wedding is now official. The funeral, presumably, is not.
