Survivor Greece has been shut down after contestant Stavros Floros, 21, lost part of his left leg when a tourist boat struck him while spearfishing in the Dominican Republic.
Survivor Greece has been shut down after contestant Stavros Floros, 21, suffered a partial leg amputation when a tourist boat struck him while spearfishing in the Dominican Republic on May 10.
Production on Survivor Greece has been suspended indefinitely following a severe accident that left a contestant partially amputated and hospitalized in serious condition. Stavros Floros, a 21-year-old beekeeper competing on the show, was struck by a tourist boat while spearfishing off the coast of Saona Island in the Dominican Republic, according to production company AcunMedya.
The accident occurred on May 10 during a break from filming, outside of any competitive element of the show. One of the boat’s engine propellers struck Floros, partially amputating his left leg below the knee and causing severe damage to his right ankle. He was reportedly diving without a surface marker buoy in an area frequented by vessel traffic at the time.
AcunMedya confirmed the shutdown in a statement released to the Toronto Sun and posted separately in Greek, saying the company is “investigating the causes of the incident in order to fully determine the circumstances.” Floros remains hospitalized but is described as being in serious and stable condition. The production company said he is out of immediate danger.
SKAI television, which airs the show in Greece, announced it would assist with Floros’ medical costs. Local authorities in the Dominican Republic are separately investigating the accident. No timeline for a resumption of production has been given, and the network has not announced whether the current season will air.
Survivor Greece is produced by AcunMedya, the Turkish media company behind several international versions of the Survivor format. The show films in remote locations and typically involves physical challenges in open water and jungle terrain, conditions that carry inherent risks for cast and crew. The incident raises questions about off-duty safety protocols for contestants during production breaks in remote locations.
The accident is among the more serious on-production injuries to emerge from a reality competition in recent memory. The show’s indefinite suspension reflects the severity of Floros’ condition and the ongoing investigation into how the accident occurred.
Floros, who had been competing as a beekeeper from Greece, had no public profile before joining the show. His family’s response to the accident has not been reported.
