Two years after being inducted into the Loyola Academy Athletic Hall of Fame for his excellence on the football field, school legend Matthew Cherry earned a new piece of hardware to add to the school trophy cabinet — an Academy Award.

Cherry won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the 92nd Academy Awards for his film “Hair Love,” which tells the story of an African-American dad attempting to style his young daughter’s hair for the first time. Cherry co-created the 6-minute film with Karen Rupert Toliver.
